Asbestos Accreditation/Reaccreditation Information
Initial Courses for Accreditation:
UF TREEO’s initial asbestos courses are approved by the EPA and the State of Florida for persons wishing to receive accreditation. EPA-approved training courses are in accordance with Florida BPR: Asbestos Licensing Unit (UF TREEO, Training Provider No. FL 49-0000995). See the FL BPR: Asbestos Licensing Unit website for detailed information and regulations.
Students are required by regulation to take an annual refresher course within one year of the date of their initial course to legally work in the State of Florida. There is an additional grace period of one year if a student is not working in the area. However, if the student goes over two years from the exact date of their initial course (or last refresher) they must take the initial course again.
In the State of Florida:
- Asbestos: Inspectors , Asbestos: Management Planners, and Asbestos: Project Designers must work under the direction of a Florida Licensed Asbestos Consultant.
- Asbestos Contactor/Supervisors must work under the direction of a Florida Licensed Asbestos Contractor.
- Asbestos Workers must work under the supervision of an Asbestos: Competent Person who is an Asbestos: Contractor/Supervisor.
The difference between an Asbestos: Management Planner, Asbestos: Project Designer, and Asbestos: Project Monitor is:
An Asbestos Management Planner works under the direction of a Florida Licensed Asbestos Consultant and engages in the development of asbestos abatement schedules or operation and maintenance plans. Asbestos Management Planners must complete a two-day Asbestos: Management Planner course and a three-day Asbestos: Project Design course.
An Asbestos Project Designer works under the direction of a Florida Licensed Asbestos Consultant and engages in the design of project specifications for asbestos abatement projects. Asbestos Project Designers must complete a three-day Asbestos: Project Design course.
An Asbestos Project Monitor ensures an asbestos abatement project’s compliance with project specifications, applicable safety and health regulations, and other contract requirements under the direction of a licensed consultant. Project monitors must complete a five-day Asbestos: Contractor/Supervisor course and an Asbestos Sampling course (NIOSH Course 582).
A Certificate of Accreditation will be issued for those who attend and successfully complete the initial course(s).
It is a mandatory EPA requirement for participants to arrive on time and remain in the classroom for the duration of the course to receive their certificates.
Refresher Classes for Reaccreditation:
UF TREEO’s asbestos refresher courses are approved by the EPA and the State of Florida (FL BPR: Asbestos Licensing Unit) (UF TREEO Training Provider No. FL 49-0000995) for persons wishing to receive reaccreditation. In addition, the Inspector Refresher, Management Planner Refresher, and Contractor/Supervisor Refresher are approved by Alabama Safe State.
To be reaccredited in the courses you must provide proof of having successfully completed the initial EPA-approved training course in accordance with FL BPR: Asbestos Licensing Unit and any annual refresher courses in the discipline in which you seek reaccreditation. If your initial and/or latest refresher course certificates were issued through another training provider, you must submit copies with your registration before the course date for each discipline.
Students are required by regulation to take a refresher course within one year of the date of their initial course, or their last refresher, to legally work in the State of Florida. There is an additional grace period of one year if a student is not working in the area. However, if the student goes over two years from the exact date of their initial course exam, or last refresher exam, they must take the initial course again.
Successful completion of a 25-question examination is required for all refresher courses. Participants are required to score 70% or above on this exam. See Examinations on the Asbestos Program page under Student Resources for exam study tips.
